The Distillery Gallery is pleased to host Boston-based artist Marissa Cote’s first solo presentation, I promise to stay in touch. Through her work, Cote ruminates on how the consequences of existing within contemporary American systems hinder our ability to exercise good love. Cote questions faults in the ways we try to connect with one another. What is it that limits us from being close? Is it more than just you and me? I promise to stay in touch ushers the viewer into the visual dissonance of slow-hand woven forms and co-opted materials. Uncertainty underpins the dichotomous presentation; anchors hang from suspended cloth as chain pools on the floor. The tender commitment of the show’s title “to stay in touch” is of both flesh and feeling - to resist the emotional by-products of systemic white supremacy in America and reconsider touch as an act of revolution.
